Fund-starved Telangana government mulls auctioning assigned land

Official sources said that collectors of districts surrounding Hyderabad have been asked to identify assigned land in their respective areas which was lying fallow.

In a massive exercise to prop up revenue mobilisation, the state government is planning to take over thousands of assigned land given to farmers in prime areas — especially Ranga Reddy  and medchal  districts — and auction it at market rate. Official sources said that collectors of districts surrounding Hyderabad have been asked to identify assigned land in their respective areas which was lying fallow.

With no major chunks of vacant land available around the city as most of it has already been given to companies, auctioned or encroached, the state was now looking at assigned land allotted to farmers several decades ago for cultivation but without ownership rights. The government has the power to resume such land whenever it wants and, as there was little farming around Hyderabad, it now intends to compensate farmers and then auction the land.
